The expected opening, initially scheduled for last summer, has been postponed due to archaeological findings and the pandemic. This will be the first grand opening of Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida, although the project – which had citizen participation – began to be executed during the legislature of Manuela Carmena.

In an interview this Wednesday on Onda Madrid Paloma García Romero, the Madrid City Council’s delegate for works and facilities, detailed that the new square will have more than 70,000 square meters in which the space is designed for pedestrians.

For this purpose, the archaeological remains found during the works, which belong to the basement of the Godoy Palace, the old Royal Stables (next to the Sabatini Gardens) and the old San Gil Barracks, are also being taken into account. These vestiges have increased the initial budget of the project by 20%, which translates into 12.3 million euros.

In addition to integrating the remains into the walking area, Paloma García explained in her interview on Onda Madrid that «an archaeological itinerary will be implemented and an Interpretation Center of the city’s monumental cornice will be built», with the aim of «explaining and helping to understand the evolution of the city very close to the place where it was born».
